The purpose of an accrual method of accounting is to match income and expenses in the correct year. Your accounting method includes not only the overall method of accounting you use, but also the accounting treatment you use for any material item. You must file Form W-2 to report payments to your employees, such as wages, tips, and other compensation; and withheld income, social security, and Medicare taxes. Your gain or loss realized from a disposition of property is usually a recognized gain or loss for tax purposes. However, a gain or loss realized from certain exchanges of property is not recognized. Also, you cannot deduct a loss from the disposition of property held for personal use. Under the cash method, you generally deduct expenses in the tax year in which you actually pay them.

For your net earnings figured using the regular method, see line 4a of your Schedule SE (Form 1040). If you are a member of the crew on a boat that catches fish or other aquatic life, your earnings are subject to SE tax if all the following conditions apply. All of your combined wages, tips, and net earnings in 2022 are subject to any combination of the 2.9% Medicare part of SE tax, Medicare tax, or Medicare part of railroad retirement tax. If you are self-employed as a sole proprietor or independent contractor, you generally use Schedule C (Form 1040) to figure your earnings subject to SE tax. You may also be able to deduct the following expenses.
You must remit your sales tax liability to the government. As a result, collected sales tax falls under the liability category. Do this by crediting the purchases or sales account with the cost of merchandise you withdraw for personal use. You must also charge the amount to your drawing account. You would not be allowed any charitable contribution deduction for the contributed property. You rent out your property and the rental agreement directs the lessee to pay the rent to your son. If you sell or exchange depreciable property at a gain, you may have to treat all or part of the gain due to depreciation as ordinary income.
For example, if you paid $7,000 in state and local sales taxes in 2022 and also $7,000 in state and local income taxes in 2022, you could claim a $7,000 sales tax deduction or a $7,000 income tax deduction. Either would lower your 2022 taxable income, for federal income tax purposes, by $7,000. However, you couldn’t combine the sales tax and state and local income tax deduction to claim a $14,000 SALT deduction. If the expenses are substantiated, you can deduct the allowable amount on your tax return. Because of differences between accounting methods and tax law, the amount you can deduct for tax purposes may not be the same as the amount you deduct on your business books and records. For example, you can deduct 100% of the cost of meals on your business books and records.
Self-Employment (SE) Tax
Indirect costs include repairs and other expenses that directly benefit or are incurred by reason of your improvement. For example, if you improve the electrical system in your building, you must also capitalize the costs of repairing the holes that you made in walls to install the new wiring. This rule applies even if this work, performed by itself, would otherwise be treated as currently deductible repair costs. If you tally up your itemized deductions and they don’t exceed the standard deduction amount, you’re better off not itemizing at all.
You must reduce its cost (amortizable basis) by the amount of any special allowance you claim. A supplier-based intangible is the value resulting from the future acquisitions (through contract or other relationships with suppliers in the ordinary course of business) of goods or services that you will sell or use.
